English grammar and vocabulary ::

Verbs combined with adverbial particles or prepositions or with both. When a verb + particle (or a verb+ preposition is a unit of meaning it is a PHRASAL VERB.' 'Make out' (=understand) and 'put off' (= postpone) are examples of phrasal verbs. Sometimes a verb, an adverbial particle and a preposition combine together to form one unit of meaning. A well-known example is ' put up with' (meaning, tolerate). This too is a phrasal verb.

Some of the combinations are easy to understand. One can work out their meaning form the individual verbs and particles or prepositions as in 'write down' (record something on paper). In case of other combinations their use often poses problems in as much as the lexical meaning of the individual verb differs when it is combined with the particle or preposition. The meaning of the phrasal verb, 'Turn down' (=reject) is not understood by knowing the meaning of the verb, 'turn' or the particle, 'down' in the combination. There are complex idioms with additional word or words (Noun, Pronoun, Adjective, etc.) attached to them as-'make the best of and 'adapt oneself to'. Like other phrasal verbs these expressions have one unit of meaning each.

Besides these, there are 'completive intensives' that do not change the meaning of the verbs but show that verbs are performed completely, e.g. 'spread out', 'link up'.

A single word synonym sometimes serves as a poor substitute for a phrasal verb. In many contexts single words sound unnatural whereas phrasal verbs seem quite natural. The scope of phrasal verbs is growing and changing.

Since English is taught as the second language (in most of the States in India) at Secondary, Higher Secondary and Degree stages, attempts e been made in this book to give the readers a broad understanding of the phrasal verbs with their meanings in Oriya and their usages. All such efforts will be fruitful if the book is proved useful to the readers who wish to improve their English.
